Getting to Xalapa, Veracruz

For getting to Xalapa your options are by air or bus.

By Air

Most international flights arrive at Mexico City Airport. But if you want to avoid this, there are some options. Check for flights arriving at either Monterrey or Cancun, or try flying directly to Veracruz.

Veracruz airport, arriving directly from Houston or connecting at Mexico city airport. Other routes might be convenient to particular cases entering Mexico and connecting domestic flights in Guadalajara (Jalisco) in the west, Monterrey (Nuevo León) in the north, or even Cancun in the east. From these three cities you connect  to Veracruz Airport flying non-stop. Check map with all direct flights to Veracruz. From Veracruz airport to Xalapa by taxi

After pickup of your luggage, you will exit the arrival zone and will enter to the main hall of the airport building. The restaurant will be to your left, upstairs; the main exit will be to your right. Before you leave the building, buy your ticket for the official taxi ($60 dollars, one hour 15 mins ride). Just a few steps away and you will be meeting your taxi driver. Taxis are available late at night until last flight arrives.

From Veracruz airport to Xalapa by bus

Option 1: There is a relatively new bus service provided by ADO. Small buses depart right there at the Airport,  after most flight arrivals. Upon arrival check at the ADO desk for next bus to Xalapa. Announced schedule: 08:20, 09:20, 10:20, 12:00, 14:40, 18:00, 20:20, 21:30, 23:30. The Price is $16 dollars. Reservations: (+52) 228-842-2523 (in Xalapa) or (+52) 229 939-5571 (at the airport in Veracruz). Buses arrive at bus terminal CAXA near downtown Xalapa. A ticket for your taxi will go anywhere from $2 dollars to $4 dollars, depending on distance to your hotel.

Option 2 : You will need to move by taxi ($10 dollars) from the airport to the bus station in Veracruz downtown (about 20 minutes). Buses from Veracruz to Xalapa ($10 dollars, 1 hour 30 mins) depart every 20 minutes by ADO and ADO-GL. Buses arrive at bus terminal CAXA near downtown Xalapa. A ticket for your taxi will go anywhere from $2 dollars to $4 dollars, depending on distance to your hotel.

Other options are:

Puebla airport, only if arriving directly. Taxi to the bus terminal CAPU (30 mins. ride). Bus line with run to Xalapa is ADO. The trip Puebla-Xalapa by bus costs $ 20 dollars (three hours).

Mexico City airport. The trip Mexico-Xalapa is by bus ($35 dollars, five hours). You need to move from the airport to the bus terminal TAPO in Mexico City. Transfer by taxi to the bus terminal TAPO (about 20 minutes).

Xalapa airport, connecting at Mexico city airport. (Small plane, only one flight a day). From the airport, 30 mins in taxi to downtown Xalapa).

By Bus

All buses to Xalapa arrive at terminal CAXA on 20 de Noviembre Avenue, east of downtown area. Taxis are available right there at the terminal on the ground floor. For those flying into Mexico City Airport, you will need to transfer by taxi to the bus terminal TAPO (about 20 minutes). Bus lines serving Xalapa are ADO, ADO-GL, and UNO. The trip takes about 5 hours. It is advisable to buy tickets in advance. New bus service direct to Xalapa by ADO from the Mexico City airport. Schedule: Airport to Xalapa, 19:00 & 20:46. Xalapa to Mex City Airport, 2:01 & 23:01.
